I have added the Qlippoth collection from Mary Church’s middle period when she was attending art school 2014-2016. This is a new style that Church invented in which she created her own mythology inspired by the Kabbalistic idea of the qlippoth—meaning “shards”—which are demonic beings that are identified with physical matter and which are against the Beings of Light, namely, the Sephirot.
The myth is that when the Creator Being created the world out of vessels to hold the Light, the Light was too powerful and overcame the vessels which broke into shards that make up the material world. This is what the art of the great contemporary artist Anselm Kiefer is based upon and Mary Church was a huge fan of Kiefer, who had a propensity to break panes of glass upon the floors of his installations to illustrate the myth, known as Shevirat ha-Kelim or “the breaking of the vessels.”
Church has transformed the myth into a contemporary paradigm in which the qlippoth become identified with Industrial Society as against the Beings of Light which, for Church, was Nature itself, which she saw as a mystical revelation of the Creator’s power. One simply cannot understand these images without knowing the Kabbalistic myth. Here are the screenshots of the collection so far:
