Nathaniel Hawthorne’s great great grandfather John Hathorne died in Salem, Massachusetts in 1717. He had been one of the chief examining magistrates during the witch trials of 1692, from which he profited greatly by confiscating the property of those whom he sent to prison to await their trials under the very stern judge William Stoughton.
