I am teaching a new online course at my school, “The Evolution of Media Studies.” We will spend 8 weeks discussing and analyzing the greatest theoreticians of the field of media studies. Beginning with Harold Innis’s 1950 foundational text Empire and Communications, we will then move on to Marshall McLuhan’s greatest book, The Mechanical Bride (1964); following which, we will read Walter Ong’s best book Orality and Literacy, which was heavily influenced by McLuhan; after that, we will read Into the Universe of Technical Images (1985) by Vilem Flusser, a little known German-Brazilian theoretician; then we will read Leonard Shlain’s 1998 book The Alphabet vs. The Goddess and then finally we will read my own 2011 book about the Internet, The New Media Invasion.
Class begins on Saturday, July 15 at 2 pm MST, which lasts for two hours, to be followed by 7 more Saturdays until September 2. Classes are held online over zoom and are always recorded in case anyone can’t make a particular Saturday.
So come join us for coffee and stimulating discussions. We always have a great time at my school, and the popular nature of the material for this class will, I am certain, lead to conversations which will be loads of fun!
See you in class!
